Spravato Treatment
Innovative Care for Treatment Resistant Depression

At Refuge Mental Health, we understand that depression is not one-size-fits-all. For some, traditional antidepressants and therapies may not provide the relief they need. That is where Spravato comes in. Spravato (esketamine) is a breakthrough treatment that offers new hope for individuals living with treatment-resistant depression.
What is Spravato?
Spravato is an FDA-approved medication derived from ketamine and administered as a nasal spray in a certified clinical setting. Unlike traditional oral antidepressants, Spravato works on a different part of the brain and may provide fast-acting results for those who have not responded to other forms of treatment.
This treatment is designed to work in combination with an oral antidepressant and is available only through REMS-certified providers like Refuge Mental Health.
Who Is It For?
Spravato may be an option for you if:
- You have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD)
- You have tried two or more antidepressant medications without success
- You are working with a healthcare provider to manage treatment-resistant depression
A full psychiatric evaluation is required to determine if Spravato is appropriate for your needs. Janelle Hill, APRN, PMHNP-BC, will work closely with you to review your history, assess eligibility, and build a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
What to Expect
Spravato is administered in-office at Refuge Mental Health under clinical supervision. Each treatment session involves self-administering the nasal spray while being monitored in a calm and private space. Sessions typically last about two hours to allow for observation and post-treatment care.
During your time in the office, you will be monitored for side effects and supported throughout the entire process. After each treatment, you will need a safe way to get home. This can be a trusted support person, a ride service such as Uber or Lyft, or another form of arranged transportation.
Treatment is typically administered twice a week for the first four weeks, then once weekly or every other week based on your response and provider recommendations.
Is Spravato Safe?
Spravato has been shown to be effective in reducing depressive symptoms in people with treatment-resistant depression. Like all medications, it comes with potential side effects, which may include dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or dissociation. However, 98% of any side effects experienced during Spravato treatment resolve within 24 hours. All sessions are carefully monitored to ensure your comfort and safety.
Before starting treatment, we will discuss the benefits and risks in detail and answer any questions you may have.
